India has a rich cultural heritage reflecting a glorious past in almost all spheres of life, social, economic, educational, academic, cultural and, most importantly, spiritual. If we delve into the rich ancient literature
from the various traditions, we find a panoramic view of India of the 6th
century B.C. and of later period, particularly of the area known as Majjhima
Desa or the Middle Land. This is the land where Buddhism originated and is
known today as Bodhagaya. Buddhism later on penetrated the whole of
Asia, and now the entire world.
Buddhism has conquered the hearts of millions and influenced the intellect
of the elite and won over the spirit of the powerful rulers. Its intermingling
with the local cultures and mores, its deep and pervasive impact on the
mind of the peoples have been immense. It not only moulded and
reformulated the original thoughts, ideas and ideals, but also brought
profound changes in social, cultural and religious life. The sublime teaching
of the Buddha still shows the path of non-violence, peace and harmony in
